Ad design by TB featuring cover art by Thomas Ott
Coming in May is the debut of one of our (RAW STUDIOS) passion projects, the Dark Country graphic novel - based on the short story that inspired the 2009 film Dark Country, directed by and starring Thomas Jane - The graphic adaptation is a bit of a different animal, having been directly adapted from the short story by screenwriter Tab (Gorillas in the Mist, Disney's TARZAN) Murphy. The film does not spoon-feed it's audience so it's up to the viewers subjectivity to fill in the blanks. With the graphic novel, some of those blanks are filled in, though certainly not all. Absorbed together it's like the complete experience (but only if you've been lucky enough to have seen the film in 3D, the way it was intended to be seen!).
The Graphic presentation is illustrated by world reknown Swiss artist, Thomas Ott. Ott's signature 'silent' panels and scratchboard style were huge inspirations to director Jane when making the film. The 'silent' sequential pages are Ott's master device in building tension, and it's something his fans are very familiar with. That's the way Ott's art is presented within, with no word balloons to lead the reader along. The short story by Murphy immediately follows the graphic narative. Also included is an extra section filled with illustration, concept art, storyboards and photos from the production by Bernie Wrightson, David Allcock, and myself. Intro, forward, and afterword from Thomas Jane, 3D prioneer Ray 3D Zone, and film noir historian Eddie Muller!
The Dark Country GN premieres in digital format exclusively at Comixology in May. Limited edition Hardcover will be available in July and will debut at San Diego Comicon. Come see Thomas Jane and myself at the Raw Comics booth!
