Iron Man: The Rapture

One of the highlights of the past few months has been working on Iron Man - The Rapture, for Marvel Comics. Traditionally I don't delve into the world of the Superhero genre all that much but when I was asked if I'd like to do covers for Iron Man there was hardly a way I could say no, especially after I got a look at Lan Medina's incredible interior art. The story by Alexander Irvine is a real treat too. That makes for some splendid comics reading and you'll definitely want to make sure The Rapture is on your hit list.

The covers run the gambit from the traditional approach; pen, brush, and ink, to experiments in multimedia. I've been straddling two worlds between comics, which gravitate towards a more traditional approach, and the commercial art world where anything goes. This series' covers are an amalgam of those stylistic choices and Iron Man - The Rapture was a perfect vehicle to unleash something in this vein where technology collides with the organic. I'm not even sure if it was a conscious statement on my part. Each cover fairly dictated it's own direction and I just went along for the ride. Be sure to check out this most excellent new mini-series which goes on sale November 3.

Yes, my favorite month is October cause mainly it means FALL/AUTUMN is here, but it's even better when you get a crack at doing a teaser poster for one of your favorite characters. I'm creating some stuff that's got me absolutely stoked. Expect an announcement on this soon. Finally, Halloween weekend brings the second annual Long Beach Comicon at the Long Beach Convention Center, Long Beach California. I'll be in attendance with my partner in crime, Thomas Jane (The Punisher, *61, Hung, The Mist) running the RAW Studios booth all weekend. We're doing our annual Halloween screening of Tom's film, Dark Country on Friday night, followed Saturday night by another screening with live commentary from Jane and myself + some surprise guests. Both showings of Dark Country will be presented in 3D! Following Saturday's screening stick around for the world premiere unveiling of Frank Darabont's THE WALKING DEAD, uncut. Gonna be THE party to be at.

The passing of Steve Knoth

Not the normal update though it is a sad and necessary one - On October 2nd, 2010, a core group of friends and loved ones lost a diamond - A super-cool cat who battled demons for most of his life. Steve Knoth was a warrior. This is but one of my memories.

I loved Steve, in that way that brothers do. I discovered the oddity of Knoth when I found myself beating the decks of BJHS for the first time. 7th grade can be rather terrifying but I found a coupla new friends pretty quick, Eddie King and Steve Knoth. Steve was blessed (or cursed) with a sardonic wit that fascinated me. I remember the first time I spent the night at his house, it was the stuff of pre-adolescent legend. He had this huge room (formerly his older bother's), he had HBO (wha?) he had Lennon, Morrison, The Stones, and KISS posters adorning the walls . . . Crazy for me and my sheltered upbringing. Steve's brother (Rick, the Ron Wood look-alike) was somewhere wreaking havoc and had left all of his records so it was hours of The Tubes, Stones, Syd Barrett era Floyd, Ramones, Beatles, NYC Dolls, the list goes on (and on and on). It was a seminal moment for me, a musical education, and I remember thinking, because of Rick, Steve's grown up with this treasure trove - He's miles ahead of me. We fake jammed (neither of us knew how to play), I had my VOX and Steve had his Electra, we plugged in and made horrible/beautiful noise . . . AND had a complete F'ing BALL. We were determined at that point to start our own band, which we fiddled with throughout Jr. High. I think we actually slept for maybe 2 hours that Friday/Saturday. To this day I think of that night fairly often . . . when I hear a certain song or inexplicably a picture of Steve's black-frame adorned mug appears in my head from nowhere. I had remained a friend of Steve's all the while I made Bloomington my home, through the Gallery (our favorite watering HOLE) or when I'd run into him doing a cleaning gig. We always shared an in-joke and always departed with a mutual twinkle in our eyes. Many a night over the ensuing years we stayed up till dawn sipping the nectar of the Gods and listening to our favorite music at an after hours, normally after a sweet Something Brother's show at the Gallery. Knoth was always GREAT company. Looking forward to that next jam-session in Valhalla, mon frere. I've always loved Steve, in the way that brothers do.   - TB

Busy is as busy does . . .

Double cover for Bullseye: The Perfect Game - Issues 1 and 2. 

When it rains it pours. Entering into August things were already packed. Comicon throws everything leading up to it into a frenzy, but the aftermath is even more chaotic. I like to work. I love my job (if you can call it that) but the simple fact is you can't do EVERYTHING that's thrown at you. Unless you're insane, and I must be. It's strange not being on a big monthly book like Punisher Max, or Hellbazer every month. When that constant, ever-present friend at your side suddenly leaves it's rather daunting. Personally, it's daunting because I miss working on those titles but there is also that regularity, that visibility you get used to. Trust me, it's nice. For the past 2 years I've been bouncing around like a pin-ball working on lots of nice projects but it's a hodge-podge, you never know where I'll show up next.

So for those of you with interest I'll list a few. First up is a couple of Punisher one-shot covers. Both have great scripts and both are illustrated by the incomparable Shawn Martinbrough. First up is The Punisher: Hot Rods Of Death - Total lawless road picture in the spirit of The Road Warrior. The second is The Punisher: Tiny Ugly World, a great little script about a very disturbed man, and I'm not talking about Frank Castle. Frank's got his little peccadilloes but he's flat-line sane next to this fella. Sweet stuff.

Then we got a nice departure, Bullseye! I've loved the character since Frank Miller's first go-round on Daredevil back in the early 80's. Getting an opportunity to do covers for Bullseye: The Perfect Game, was a nice chance to delve a little further into Marvel's other brands. The covers I illustrated for this 2-issue series was done as a single illustration. Take a look at the pic above, that's it. This story was one of the best comic reads I've had on a LONG time so I hope you all go grab this thing cause it's worth your time.

Early July I got an offer I couldn't say no to. Longtime pal, and editor extraordinaire, Axel Alonso invited me to take a shot at Iron Man for a 4 issue series entitled, Iron Man: The Rapture. I've loved that character since the 'ol JR jr/Bob Layton days. I've been offered superhero stuff plenty of times, it's not really my favorite thing to do but that also REALLY depends on the character. And wait'll you get a gander at the incredible artwork by Lan Medina, I mean WOW. Check this one out for sure.

Now we hit August. First up was a cover for Iron Siege, a fun as hell little WWII horror yarn. The 3-issue series is written by James Abraham and Andrew Hong, and is illustrated by my good pal, Trevor Goring. Assisting them is my longtime color-partner, the uber-talented Mr. Grant Goleash. Goleash puts the perfect amount of sauce on Goring and the results are spectacular. Coming soon from IDW.

Next was a project I cannot name for a VG company. I cannot wait to show this thing off. Huge challenge and it was a total blast. The kinda shit that's right up my alley. I'll announce this as soon as I'm able. I only mention it because of the insanity I mentioned at the top of this book I'm writing.

Next up is the poster design for The Grand Masquerade, the 20th Anniversary event celebrating the creation of White Wolf's World Of Darkness. The event takes place in New Orleans the latter half of September. I'll be one of the guests of honor. Again, how could I refuse? I was there at the beginning and we somehow created lightning in a bottle with the release of Vampire The Masquerade back in 1991. Those illustrations helped to really launch my career. Working on this as we speak.

Juggling happens all the time in my line of work. I actually started my cover for Mob Rules: Book II - Skeleton Crew, prior to The Masquerade stuff, but as it falls, I'll finish it on the tail end of the Vampire goodness I'm crunching on currently.

How about a break? Nope. Toss in a cover for Zadura Magazine featuring my take on Frank Darabont's upcoming launch of Robert Kirkman's opus, THE WALKING DEAD. The new AMC series get's fat coverage in this issue and they'll also have some sweet coverage of yours truly.

Then another Iron Man cover is due, and the next cover for the new series from Garth Ennis (more on that soon). Then I've got a Rob Halford interview to write and draw for ROYAL FLUSH MAGAZINE. Then off to Toronto for a 3-day Comic Convention, then back to wrap up my latest cover for Rogue Angel. Phew!

One on One with Rob Halford

Earlier this week I sat down with The Metal God hisself, ROB HALFORD for a one on one, mano-a-mano interview which will be published in the very next issue of ROYAL FLUSH MAGAZINE. For the majority of my life I've felt a special bond with the Judas Priest frontman mainly because the lyrics he writes speak to me on such a visual level, but also because of his undeniable presence. When the opportunity arose for me to illustrate a few pieces for a proposed Halford interview for Josh Bernstein's Royal Flush Mag, I leapt at the opportunity. But then I thought, hey, why shouldn't I be the one to interview him? Here was a possible chance to at least speak with an icon whom I've long had a great respect for. Ya see, this one is special. Halford (the band), Fight, 2WO, and naturally the legendary metal band, Judas Priest, have been spinning in the background for a large portion of my career as an illustrator. Halford's words, his lyrics, have always struck me deep and inspired a lot of great art. So I asked Josh, let me interview Rob, and here's why. I then wrote him out a long mail outlining my archival knowledge of the man who is MADE OF METAL. Thankfully Josh saw the value of having an artistic fella like myself interview another artistic fella. 

I didn't want to talk about all those things you've seen a million times in interviews, ie, "What's it like being a metal god?" Forget that. I wanted to climb inside the creative mind of a true artist and delve into subjects that aren't often discussed, let alone easily articulated. I'm happy to report that this mission was accomplished. I'm not exactly sure of the release date for the next Royal Flush but I will be posting that information here as soon as I have the straight intel. I'll also be posting a preview of some of the art accompanying the interview here as soon as I possibly can. Until then, load up the HALFORD playlist and hit shuffle.

It happens every year, thousands upon thousands of comic and film fans FLOCK to the gaslamp district of downtown San Diego for the annual sardine-fest. Is it packed? You betcha. Is it insane? Most certainly. It's the biggest show of it's kind in North America. This show needs no promotion so I'll stop there. 

For the 4th year in a row me and my partner, Thomas Jane will be on site, live and in person-like at the RAW Studios booth. TJ and I have ourselves a little boutique publishing company we're real proud of. We've created things like Bad Planet, a 6 issue sci-fi/horror mini series, and another book called Alien Pig Farm 3000, written by the amazing Todd Farmer! -  This year we're unveiling the long-awaited, full color trade paperback collection of Bad Planet - (A limited edition, black and white, oversized hardcover edition was released earlier this year). The new trade edition features not just all that luscious artwork by James Daly and myself in FULL COLOR, but also boasts a 16 page section in SUPERTERROR 3-D! Add to that a massive extra 40+ pages of ancillary bonus material, a cover gallery that features finished AND preliminary visions by our murderer's row of cover artists (Bernie Wrightson, Mark Schultz, Michael Wm. Red Sky Diary update

Just finished a new piece which I'm thinking will be one of the title page pieces. There will be three or more in all including a frontispiece. The new illustration is called "Sacred Ground". This scene takes place near "Detu al Agha-Amtaal" - The Valley Of The Noble Dead, the ancestral burial grounds of Clan Ulaan-Bataar. Someone asked me recently about how many illustrations I planned on doing for the illustrated novelization, my answer was "around 100", but the truth is it could be a lot more. The illustrated version of the novel will be HEAVY on art, that's the whole point ;)

Mark Hosack and I are hard at work writing the thing as we speak but the project is still at least a year away from completion. I'll be posting new art periodically to tide us all over. Many of you have been following Red Sky since it's inception back in the early 90's and there are a lot of fans who contact me regularly about this subject. I'm heartened that folks are eager to see what this whole thing is really all about, and I cannot wait to finally lift the veil.

Judge Dredd and Summer Appearance schedule

Coming soon from Rebellion Publishing comes "Mega City Masters: Volume 1", a fine collection of the very best DREDD stories from some of the greatest artistic talent in the industry, from Gibbons and Bolland to Jock and Bizley. I've long been a big fan of Judge Dredd, ever since I was in Jr. High School. If I'd known then that one day I'd get to do an honest to God cover for DREDD I would have burst into happy tears. 2000AD introduced me to one of my favorite artists, the aforementioned Brian Bolland, and you can see his influence all over my offering. Also, to clear up any confusion, this image is not (to my knowledge) a teaser for the Judge Dredd film which was recently announced at Cannes. My good pal JOCK is hard at work on concepts for the film, written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later). Hopefully we'll get a faithful adaptation this time. We should, since Dredd creator John Wagner is onboard the project as a consultant.
